President Bola Tinubu congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as Mexico’s first female President.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted that Sheinbaum’s election marks a significant milestone, amplifying women’s voices in government and shattering the political glass ceiling.
The president wrote, “Sheinabaum’s election had sent a reverberating message across the world that women must not only be participants but principal architects in shaping and implementing decisions affecting the lives of many.”
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, the President congratulates the people of Mexico and calls for the strengthening of bilateral ties between both nations across areas of mutual interest,” the statement added.

According to official results from the National Electoral Institute, Claudia Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, secured approximately 58-60 percent of the votes.
The institute reported that Sheinbaum’s lead was over 30 percentage points ahead of her main rival, Xochitl Galvez, who conceded defeat, and more than 50 percentage points ahead of the only male candidate, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez.
Sheinbaum’s popularity is largely attributed to the support of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a fellow leftist and mentor, who enjoys an approval rating exceeding 60 percent but is limited to serving only one term.
