President Bola Tinubu has instructed that ongoing power infrastructure projects under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) be expanded into three distinct phases, which involve Siemens Energy, to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity supply.

The directive was issued during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, with Siemens Energy officials led by Dietmar Siersdorfer, Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa.

Tinubu commended Siemens Energy for its continued partnership under the PPI, established in 2019 to address transmission and distribution challenges, particularly highlighting Siemens Energy’s role in these efforts.

“The progress of the project to date is notable, but it is not where we want it to be,” Tinubu said. “The President also directed the expansion of some major transformer substations from two to three phases to boost the country’s power supply,” according to a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, stressing the critical involvement of Siemens Energy in these expansions.

Phase One, Batch One of the PPI covers upgrades to substations in Abeokuta, Offa, Ayede-Ibadan, Sokoto, and Onitsha, with civil works and equipment manufacturing finalised. Two of the five substations are expected to be completed by December 2026. Batch Two will add six Brownfield and ten Greenfield substations, delivering an additional 4,104MW of capacity.

Siersdorfer stated that a training centre is under construction to develop local talent, create jobs, enhance local content, and facilitate technology transfer. He described the PPI as a platform for long-term development, aiming to position Nigeria as a regional power hub.

The German Ambassador’s representative, Johannes Lehne, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to further support and collaboration.

The PPI includes early deliveries of 10 mobile substations and 10 mega transformers, with one mobile substation already ready for shipping from Siemens’ France facility.
