President Bola Tinubu has called for a thorough review of the recent appointments to the governing boards of tertiary institutions due to inconsistencies in the process.
On Thursday, his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, announced that the review should be completed before the planned inauguration and retreat for the nominees.
This decision follows the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) threats to strike over delays in forming governing councils.
Recall that following threats by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on strike over the alleged delays in constituting governing councils, the Federal Ministry of Education had recently released names of nominees for chairmen, Pro-Chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, Polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The Ministry, led by Mamman Tahir, had earlier scheduled a retreat and the inauguration for May 31.
Public reaction to the nominations has likely influenced the President’s directive.

Allegations surfaced that the appointments did not represent the federal character of Nigeria, with some states receiving only one nomination while others received multiple.
By ordering a complete review, President Tinubu is addressing nationwide feedback.
Onanuga emphasized the President’s commitment to adhering to the principle of federal character as outlined in the constitution, ensuring that all parts of the country are fairly represented.
“The review will also take into consideration national spread and ensure every part of the country is adequately represented,” stated Tinubuās Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
