Tiwa Savage’s Water & Garri movie and the bitter truth

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

I have just finished watching the Tiwa Savage’s movie Water & Garri, and below is my honest review of the movie which was filmed in Ghana’s Cape Coast.

Picture Quality

The filming was on point with a nice cinematic effect. Even though the majority of the movie was shot in the slum, the picture was vivid with a nice tone and colour composition that gave a good impression of the communities where the movie was shot.

Picture Quality Rating: 4/5

Casting

The casting for me was quite confusing as the supposed versions of the main characters as teenagers did not bear any resemblance to their older self, which made the flashbacks part of the story telling difficult to initially comprehend.

It is worth pointing out though that the other actors featured in this movie did deliver their roles well.

Casting Rating: 2/5

Storyline

The storyline was very hard to follow due to the way it was narrated as well as the way it ended. I feel a lot more could have been made out of the story, which lacked creative depth and substance.

There were also a few unnecessary scenes that did not add any value to the story. However, the film overarching goal to depict the bitterness and sweetness of Nigerian life using the ‘Garri and Water’ metaphor came across well in the movie.

Storyline Rating: 2/5

Tiwa’s Performance

I wouldn’t say Tiwa’s acting in this movie was outstanding, but she did deliver her role well enough to get a fair rating.

While her performance wasn’t out of this world, Tiwa managed to deliver her part comfortably and I reckon if the storyline had been better narrated, it would have provided the stretch needed to take her out of her comfort zone, which she and her crew hardly got out of throughout the movie.

Tiwa’s Acting: 3/5

Overall, I would recommend that you watch the movie albeit with an open mind.
