Chelsea Football Club has entered a new era of governance after majority owner Clearlake Capital acquired full control of the Premier League institution.

Co-owners Todd Boehly, Mark Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss have officially sold their respective shares to Clearlake.

The transaction ends the shared governance structure that was put in place following the £2.3bn takeover from Roman Abramovich in May 2022. Boehly, Walter, and Wyss previously held a combined 38.5% equity stake, while Clearlake owned 61.5%.

With the buyout completed, Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano assume absolute operational and financial control over the London club. This means Boehly steps down from his role as Chelsea chairman, a position he occupied for over four years.

“I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans,” Boehly stated upon his departure.

“I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the club,” Boehly added.

“I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.”

Resolving executive rifts and setting a unified future direction

The sale follows months of speculation regarding internal friction within Stamford Bridge’s board level.

Tensions regarding recruitment policy, stadium redevelopment strategies, and executive leadership style emerged in 2024, leading both factions to explore buy-out options.

During Boehly’s tenure, Chelsea embarked on an unprecedented transfer spending spree exceeding £1bn on young international talent. However, the club faced mixed on-pitch results and frequent managerial changes.

By securing 100% equity, Clearlake aims to streamline decision-making across sporting operations and commercial endeavours.
