Top 5 Nigerian sportspersons in 2022


Since the start of this year, there have been amazing Nigerian sportspersons who broke barriers and made giant strides by still projecting Nigeria as not only the giant of Africa but also a strong force in the sporting world to reckon with.

Here are top five Nigerian athletes who represented Nigeria globally and are currently making Nigerians and the entire country proud of them.

Tobi Amusan

Tobi Amusan

Tobi Amusan, aged 25 years old, is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles and also competes as a sprinter.

She recently took the whole world by surprise when she broke Gail Devers’ 22-year old meeting record in a wining time of 12.29secs.

She is currently a record holder in World Championship, Commonwealth and Africa Championship in the 100 m hurdles.

Ese Brume

Ese Brume

Ese Brume is a Nigerian athlete who specializes in the long jump. The two-time world medallist, in 2022, reclaimed the Commonwealth Games title she won in 2014 and setting a new championship record of 7.00m in the process.

In an interview she had with BBC, she said, “this is special for me because it shows consistency. It shows the hard work of all those that have supported me and my coach, who has been backing me up.”

“Sometimes it’s about how you’re able to show that what you’re doing is not a fluke.”

Ese Brume is currently the commonwealth champion and a three-time African senior champion in the long Jump, African junior record and African record in the event.

Kenneth Omeruo

Kenneth Omeruo

He was named Leganes captain earlier in the year. He’s made over 100 appearances for Leganes and has been a consistent player for the club since joining them in 2018.

He won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 as he started all Super Eagles’ matches during the tournament.

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is a Nigerian-American olympic athlete, specializing in throwing events. He recently set Championship Record in Shot put, and won 5th GOLD for Nigeria in Mauritius.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist has also won titles at the 2018 African Championships in Asaba and 2019 African Games in Rabat.

Favour Ofili

Favour Ofili

Favour Ofili is a Nigerian sprinter who recently bagged 200m Commonwealth Games Silver Medal.

She has shown so much promise this season by breaking Blessing Okagbare’s Nigerian Record of 22.04s, becoming the first Nigerian woman in history to run sub 22s when she ran 21.96s in May.

She also won the 400m Silver medal three years ago at the African Games in Rabat.
