Top European Leagues Review


We are back with the weekly review of top actions across the top European leagues. 

Last week’s action saw entertainment from the top teams as well as a shocker for Liverpool after recently defeating Manchester City.

English Premier League

Southampton 1-1 Arsenal

 Southampton on Sunday halted the winning run of Arsenal at St Mary’s by holding them to a 1-1 draw.

The Gunners were in the driving seat when Granit Xhaka gave them an early lead with his second goal in as many games. The Swiss swept the ball first time into the roof of the net from Ben White’s low delivery.

Stuart Armstrong’s first Southampton campaign goal salvaged a draw for the Saints. The result leaves Arsenal just two points behind Manchester City, who had beaten Brighton 3-1 24 hours earlier at the Etihad.

Tottenham Hotspurs 1-2 Newcastle

Newcastle United on Sunday continued their impressive early season form by defeating Tottenham Hotspurs to occupy the fourth spot in the Premier League table. The Toon Army went into the lead in a controversial circumstance. Callum Wilson had scored with an excellent lob from outside the after colliding with Hugo Lloris. The goal was awarded after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check for a foul and handball.

They extended their lead before half-time. Spurs got punished after a poor clearance by Lloris was intercepted by Sean Longstaff. Miguel Almiron beat one opponent and went around another before firing under the Spurs keeper for his fifth goal in five league games after colliding with Hugo Lloris. The goal was awarded after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check for a foul.

In the second half, Spurs reduced the deficit to one through Harry Kane’s downward header from close range.

Newcastle held on to secure the points. This s the first time Newcastle will get to the top four of the table, with 12 games played since April 2012.


Earlier on Saturday, Manchester United held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge while Promoted side, Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool with a 1-0 win.


La Liga

Barcelona 4-0 Bilbao

Barcelona continue their push for the top spot in the Spanish La Liga with another impressive win against Atletic Bilbao.

It was an all-round impressive performance from the Catalan club as Lewandowski scored his 12th goal in 11 La Liga games.

The win moves Barcelona three points behind leaders Real Madrid. The Poland striker provided the assist for the opener, lofting the ball for Ousmane Dembele to head in. Dembele then laid the ball for Sergi Roberto to make it 2-0.

The Frenchman provided the pass for the Polish to score his side’s third goal. He then later set up a late fourth as Ferran Torres swept in.


Real Madrid 3-1 Sevilla

 La Liga champions, Real Madrid proved their mettle again with two late goals that ended the resistance of visitors Sevilla. The hosts were on the brink of dropping points for only the second time this season before substitute Lucas Vazquez and Fede Valverde secured victory.

Luka Modric had given Les Merengues an early opener with a tap-in before Sevilla’s Erik Lamela slid in a second-half equaliser. Real eventually proved their class which initially move them six points clear of Barcelona, before the Catalan eventually reduced it to three after a 4-0 win over Bilbao. This makes it Madrid’s 10th win in 11 La Liga games this season.


Serie A

AS Roma 0-1 Napoli

A wonderful strike from Victor Osimhen made it 11 straight wins as Napoli recorded a 1 -0 win against Roma.

The visitors finally broke Roma’s resistance in the 80th minute as Osimhen beat Chris Smalling to a long ball before hitting a brilliant half-volley from a tight angle past Rui Patricio.

This takes Luciano Spalletti’s side three points clear of AC Milan at the top.
