Trump dismisses Iran World Cup concerns as global tensions cast shadow over 2026 tournament

Donald Trump says he doesn't care if Iran chooses to withdraw from the 2026 World Cup, amid tension between the Middle East Country and the US.

Donald Trump has declared he “does not care” whether Iran features at the 2026 World Cup. His blunt remark arrives amid intensifying US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Meanwhile, Tehran has launched retaliatory attacks on US-allied Gulf states.

The United States will co-host the tournament with Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July. However, geopolitical tensions now threaten to overshadow preparations. Still, Trump dismissed concerns in characteristically direct fashion.

“I really don’t care,” Trump told Politico about Iran playing in the tournament. “I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.” Trump’s comments quickly stirred debate across diplomatic and sporting circles.

Iran have secured qualification for a fourth straight World Cup appearance and are scheduled to open against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, with their final group fixture is set for Seattle against Egypt.

Iran’s 2026 World Cup participation in doubt amid escalating regional conflict

Previously, Iran remained in the competition after US strikes on nuclear facilities last summer. Yet the current crisis appears far more severe. Consequently, uncertainty now clouds their participation.

Mehdi Taj, head of Iran’s football federation, reportedly voiced concern. He said it was “far from our expectations that we can look at the World Cup with hope”. Furthermore, he noted sports authorities would determine if action becomes necessary.
