Tyla rejects Tiwa Savage’s apology over ‘coloured’ remark

South African singer Tyla has openly distanced herself from the apology made by Nigerian star Tiwa Savage to Black Americans concerning her use of the term “coloured.”

The issue began when Tyla described herself as “coloured,” a word commonly used in South Africa to refer to people of mixed descent.

While the description is accepted in her country, it stirred anger in the United States, where the term is considered offensive due to its historical links to racial discrimination.

Following the backlash from many African-Americans, Tiwa Savage took it upon herself to apologize on behalf of Tyla during her appearance on The Breakfast Club in the United States.

She said she felt a duty to speak as an elder in the industry.

Her move, however, was met with resistance from South Africans, who criticized her for addressing a matter deeply tied to their identity without proper context.

During her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York over the weekend, Tyla made her stand clear.

She told the crowd that she was not sorry before going on to sing her hit track Mr Media.

“Sorry, I am not sorry,” she declared.

Many South Africans have since rallied behind Tyla, praising her for rejecting what they see as an unnecessary apology and for firmly holding on to her cultural identity.
