UEFA Nations League: Italy pip Hungary to finals spot

Italy have pipped Hungary to a place in the Nations League finals after defeating the hosts 2-0 in Budapest.

Marco Rossi side only needed a draw to qualify for the last four of the competition. However, a defensive lapse gave Italy the win.

Giacomo Raspadori to roll the ball into an empty net and put Italy ahead before Federico Dimarco sealed victory for the European champions after the break when he tapped in Bryan Cristante’s cross.

Italy have now finished on top of Group A3 with 11 points from six games, one point above Hungary. Germany and England finished third and fourth respectively. As a result, they have been relegated.

This is also Italy’s first win in Budapest since 1996. All thanks to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma who made several excellent late saves as well.

This could be a compensation for the Italian fans after the Azurri failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

They now join Croatia and the Netherlands in next June’s finals tournament. The last spot will be shared either by Spain or Portugal that will be playing in Braga today, Tuesday, September 27.
