Under 20 World Cup: Falconets finish group game in style with 3-1 win against Canada


Nigeria female Under 20 team, Falconets have finished their group game in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Costa Rica in style with a 3-1 win over Canada.

The Christopher Danjuma girls came back from behind to to continue their hundred percent run in the tournament.

They have now scored five goals and conceded one in three games while their unbeaten stretched to nine games from the qualifiers.

Canada got into the lead two minutes into the game off a defensive blunder from keeper Oyono.

The Falconets kept pushing forward to get back on track after finding themselves behind in early stages and they later got their reward.

The chance would eventually come in the 20th minute when a Canadian defender handled the ball inside her own area. Esther Onyenezide converted the spot-kick to bring Nigeria level.

The Super Falconets then went into the lead eight minutes later through another spot kick. Mercy Idoko was felled from a poor challenge inside the Canadian box. The referee awarded a penalty after a VAR review and Onyenezide stepped up again to convert.

Nigeria then nmaintained the lead and controlled it before putting the icing on the cake in added time through Chioma Olise.

The attacker converted the third goal off Rofiat Imuran’s cross inside to complete the score line.

This is the first time in the competition that Falconets will take nine points from the available nine in the competition. Nigeria defeated France and South Korea 1-0 each in their first two games before now.

Nigeria will now face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
