The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) have faced a major setback after broadcast partner StarTimes had terminated its five-year, ₦1 billion agreement less than a year into the contract.
The decision, confirmed by league officials, means matches will not be shown on StarTimes when the 2025/26 season begins on August 22, unless a new deal is finalised.
NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye stated the league was already in talks with other broadcasters. He named AfroSports and GIMG as potential replacements, following their presentations at the NPFL’s Annual General Meeting.

League administrators have also reaffirmed plans to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system this season. They argued the technology would raise officiating standards, even as broadcast uncertainty threatens its rollout.
Negotiations with potential partners are ongoing, with league officials indicating an agreement could be announced before the season opener. However, no timeline has been confirmed.
