Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado has been announced as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

“She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela, and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Friday while making the announcement at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

Machado, a leading voice against President Nicolás Maduro’s government, has long been recognized for her unwavering campaign to restore democracy and uphold human rights in Venezuela.

Her activism has drawn both international attention and internal resistance as she continues to challenge the country’s political status quo.

The committee’s decision comes a year after the 2024 Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo — the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations — “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.”

The group was honoured for its decades-long campaign to eliminate nuclear arms and for preserving the memories of those who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

More details to come.
