Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has been suspended for a game and received a €25,000 fine following a controversial Super Cup incident against VfB Stuttgart.
The German Football Association (DFB) made the announcement on Wednesday after completing an investigation into Boniface’s alleged unsportsmanlike conduct.
The controversy stems from an incident that occurred after the final whistle of the match between Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart, where Boniface was accused of making an obscene gesture.

Stuttgart players claimed the striker raised his middle finger in their direction during the post-match celebrations, leading to a tense atmosphere on the pitch. Although Referee Tobias Stieler did not witness the act, the allegations were serious enough to prompt an investigation.
Interestingly, the DFB proceeded with the inquiry despite the absence of TV footage or concrete evidence to back the accusations. The governing body relied heavily on the testimonies of Stuttgart players who insisted that Boniface was guilty of the gesture.
After thorough deliberation, the DFB found Boniface responsible for the misconduct, leading to the disciplinary action.
In a swift response, Boniface and his club, Bayer Leverkusen, accepted the DFB’s ruling without contest. The club’s decision to accept the verdict made the one-match suspension and hefty fine irrevocable and legally enforceable.
The ruling has sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning the lack of hard evidence and others calling for stricter discipline in football.
Boniface’s absence will be a blow for Leverkusen, as the striker has been in fine form. Despite the setback, the club is keen to move forward, focusing on upcoming matches.
