The highly anticipated Finalissima clash between the Argentina national football team and the Spain national football team has been cancelled, as escalating tensions across the Middle East forced organisers to abandon the planned encounter.
The champions of Copa América and the winners of the UEFA European Championship were scheduled to meet soon.
Initially, the blockbustre fixture was planned for March 26 in Qatar.
Officials explored several backup plans after security concerns emerged. However, negotiations between organisers and national associations ultimately failed.
UEFA confirmed the collapse in an official statement: “Due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar.”
“Uefa explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association.” Organisers also considered hosting the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
Venue disputes and scheduling conflicts seal fate of high-profile Finalissima
Another proposal involved staging two legs in Madrid and Buenos Aires. However, Argentina reportedly rejected those arrangements.
A joint statement from CONMEBOL and the Argentine federation detailed further talks: “The AFA received a proposal to hold the match at a neutral venue, Italy, on 27 March.”

“Argentina accepted the idea without objection, except for the date, suggesting 31 March.”
“Unfortunately, Uefa announced that holding the match on the 31st was not possible.”
Officials also examined the possibility of staging the match after the FIFA World Cup. Yet Spain reportedly had no available dates in their schedule.
Meanwhile, the Royal Spanish Football Federation insisted it remained open to any viable solution: “Spain was prepared to play as it has always been stated. They set no conditions.”
The Finalissima is organised jointly by UEFA and CONMEBOL every four years. The last edition saw Argentina defeat Italy at Wembley Stadium in 2022.
