We’ll support Nigerian lady jailed in Dubai — NIDCOM

NIDCOM

The Federal Government, through its agency, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has said it would support Ms Dunchi Lar who was jailed for flouting Dubai’s law.

Dinchi Lar’s family in a protest yesterday in Abuja alleged the United Arab Emirates of jailing her for a year after exposing the maltreatment of Nigerians at the country airports.

NRTC gathered that Lar on August 31 took to her Twitter page to share photos and videos of herself and other Nigerians being detained at the Dubai international airport without any excuses.

In a statement by NIDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the agency disclosed that Lar was convicted under the UAE cybercrime law, for taking people’s videos and photographs without their consent.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun said Lar’s action of posting such video and photograph on social media is punishable with a one-year jail term or a fine between approximately $69,000 and $137,000, or both jail term and fine.

He said Lar can appeal the ruling within 15 days, saying she has been assured of moral and consular support by the Nigerian mission in Dubai.

Recall that after Lar was arrested, a total number of 542 stranded Nigerians in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, were repatriated back to the country on Sunday around 4:29 am.

The stranded Nigerians who arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on Sunday around 4:29 am consisted of 79 males, 460 females, and three infants.
