Napoli has had a rather stormy campaign this season, ailing to secure a Champions League spot for next season. They finished 7th in the Serie A, their worst league finish in a decade.
It is quite tempting to attribute their underwhelming season to the poor start of the season under former manager Carlo Ancelotti, who lost his job after a winless run in 7 league games and got replaced by club legend Gennaro Gattuso.
There was hardly a significant change in their form as Gattuso also started his reign slowly and ended the season 7th in the league, which was the same spot the club was when Ancelotti was sacked.
Napoli conceded a massive 50 goals and scored just 61 goals last term which is unacceptable for a club of Napoli’s stature, suggesting that the club has both attacking and defensive issues to resolve.
The 61 goals scored is the lowest goal return for Napoli since the 2011/2012 season and Napoli’s top scorer, Milik is the 23rd on Serie A top scorers list. These emphasize the inadequacies in their frontline.

Napoli tops the key passes chart for Serie A this season. This is a shred of evidence that creating goalscoring chances isn’t the problem, but converting them. The above highlights the need for the addition of a prolific striker to their squad if they are to move forward next season.
Can Osimhen be prolific at Napoli?
Victor Osimhen has been one of the breakout starlets of the season at Lille before the French league was suspended.. The departure of Nicholas Pepe to Arsenal left a void in Lille’s forward line which Osimehn filled in no time. The Nigerian has scored 13 league goals this season and also registered four assists.
With Napoli’s attacking issues and Osimhen’s attacking prowess, going all out to secure his signature was a no brainer. Napoli signed Victor Osimehn for a transfer fee of ā¬81 million. This includes bonuses, making him the most expensive African player of all time.
Napoli expects Osimhen to hit the ground running, as soon as possible Considering he is their record transfer. Gonzalo Higuain holds the record for most goals scored in a single Serie A season (36 goals in 35 appearances).
Will this be too much to ask from Osimhen as he’s just 21 years old? He will still be expected to put their goal scoring issues to bed.
