EDITORIAL: Makoko deserves more than charity

On February 12, 2025, the National Football League (NFL) donated $100,000 to support Kai Cenat’s school project in Makoko, Lagos. The donation was part of the NFL Foundation’s Inspire Change Campaign, following a charity event in New Orleans involving Cenat and fellow content creator IShowSpeed. While this gesture is commendable, it exposes a recurring failure in Nigeria’s governance—where foreign donations and NGO-driven initiatives substitute for the government's responsibilities.

Why Nigerian students should be encouraged to study foreign languages like French, German

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

In today’s fast-changing world, being able to communicate in more than one language has become a powerful skill. Nigerian students have a lot to gain by learning foreign languages like French, German, Russian, Chinese, or even Spanish. Studying these languages at university opens doors to countless opportunities in the global labour market.

1. Increased job opportunities

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, and the country is deeply connected with the rest of the world. Many international companies and organizations operate within Nigeria or partner with Nigerian businesses. These companies often seek people who can communicate in languages like French or German to manage partnerships with their headquarters or clients in Europe and other French or German-speaking regions.

By speaking a foreign language, graduates can work in sectors such as:

  • International business: Many multinational companies are always in need of employees who can bridge the language gap.
  • Diplomacy and international relations: Speaking French or German can qualify students for roles in embassies, the United Nations, or international NGOs.
  • Tourism and hospitality: With Nigeria becoming a more attractive destination, speaking foreign languages helps in the tourism industry, welcoming foreign visitors.
  • Translation and interpretation: Organizations, governments, and media houses are always in need of translators and interpreters.

2. Expanding global connections

Speaking foreign languages allows students to connect with people from different cultures. French, for example, is spoken in 29 countries across Africa, Europe, and other continents. By learning it, Nigerian students can easily communicate with millions of people around the world.

Learning German is also highly valuable, as Germany is known for its strong economy and technological advancement. Germany has close trade ties with Nigeria, and speaking German can help students build professional relationships with German companies, especially in fields like engineering, technology, and manufacturing.

3. Foreign languages graduates have higher earning potential

In a competitive job market, skills that set you apart are highly valued. Speaking a second or third language is one of those skills. Graduates who speak foreign languages can demand higher salaries because they bring extra value to employers. They can take on jobs that monolingual employees may not qualify for, and in industries like international trade, customer service for global companies, and diplomatic services, bilingual or multilingual employees are often paid more.

Moreover, many Nigerian graduates struggle with unemployment due to limited job opportunities. However, those who have language skills in addition to their core university degree often find it easier to secure employment both locally and internationally. Some may even find remote job opportunities abroad, working for companies that need their language skills while living in Nigeria.

4. Foreign languages present innumerable opportunities for further studies and scholarships abroad

Students who study foreign languages at Nigerian universities also increase their chances of securing scholarships for further studies abroad. Many countries offer scholarships to international students, but knowing their language is often a requirement.

For example:

  • Germany offers many scholarships for Nigerian students who want to study in fields like engineering, medicine, or the arts, but most programs require knowledge of the German language.
  • France has several scholarship programs for African students, and knowing French is a big advantage when applying.
These scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, and sometimes living expenses, offering students a chance to experience education in world-class institutions.

5. Graduates of foreign languages are more culturally aware to grow personally and professionally

Learning a foreign language does not only improve career prospects but also expands a student’s worldview. When students learn a new language, they also learn about the culture, history, and traditions of the people who speak it. This knowledge fosters respect and appreciation for different cultures.

Why Nigerian students should be encouraged to study foreign languages like French, German

Studying foreign languages helps develop important life skills such as:

  • Problem-solving: Understanding a new language requires critical thinking and creativity.
  • Adaptability: Exposure to new cultures makes students more open-minded and better able to adapt to different environments.
  • Confidence: The ability to speak a foreign language boosts self-esteem and makes students feel more confident, both socially and professionally.

6. Studying foreign languages positions Nigeria for global competitiveness

If Nigeria is to continue growing as an economic and political leader in Africa, it needs more citizens who can communicate on a global level. Nigerian graduates with language skills are more likely to participate in international conferences, represent Nigeria at global forums, and take leadership roles in global organizations. By learning foreign languages, students contribute to Nigeria’s image as a diverse, capable, and globally connected country.

In conclusion, encouraging Nigerian students to study foreign languages like French and German at university is an investment in the future. The global job market rewards those who can communicate across borders and build international connections. Whether working for international companies, pursuing scholarships, or contributing to Nigeria’s global presence, students with foreign language skills have a brighter and more promising future.

By embracing the opportunity to learn languages, Nigerian students not only enrich their own lives but also position themselves as valuable assets in a rapidly globalizing world.
