The month of October is truly blessed with a lot of International Days vetted by the United Nations General Assembly. October is a special month for Nigerians as the country gained independence on the first day of the month many years ago. However, that’s not the only record marking commemoration this month, there are also events that align with a cause.We have gathered some of them for your reading today.
International Day of the Girl Child
This is commemorated on the 11th of October every year. This year’s theme is “Girls’ vision for the future”. According to Jagran Josh, the day is commemorated to raise voice for girls and stand up for their rights. UNICEF emphasizes the importance of the day as a key global moment on which to celebrate girls everywhere, amplifying their voices, actions and leadership. It is a day that belongs to everyone who cares about girls and their rights.
World Cotton Day
Coincidentally, it is today! Every October 7 was authorised by the UN General Assembly four years ago. This day is commemorated to emphasis the importance of the fibre, cotton which is produced by over 75 countries across 5 continents.
Cotton has been a source of income generation for cotton producing countries especially the C4(Cotton 4) in Africa- Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Chad. This year’s theme is ‘Cotton For Good “
World Teachers’ Day
Okay, we are little bit late on this. World Teachers’ Day was on October 5 and it was dedicated to celebrating educators that helped shaped the world in immeasurable ways. This year’s theme was “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Educationā
World Habitat Day
This year’s World Habitat Day falls on October 7. The commemoration is slated for every first Monday in October. This day is chosen to respect the living domain of man, animals and other living creatures. This year’s theme is, “Engaging youth to create a better urban future”.
World Food Day
Food is the sustainer of man and has surely been since the beginning. According to the Concern Worldwide, October 16 is assigned to promote the awareness of hunger and action for the future of food, people and the planet. Over 10% of the world’s population still face hunger This yearās World Food Day theme is: āRight to foods for a better life and a better future.ā

According to News18, cerebral palsy is a lifelong neurological disorder that affects movement, posture and coordination. This year’s theme is “Uniquely CP”.
World Smile Day
Every first Friday in October is World Smile Day and this year’s own happened to be on October 6.The commemoration is dedicated to the importance of kindness in relation to how it make people happy.
According to Compassion International, it was first celebrated in 1999, World Smile Day seeks to reclaim the original meaning and intent of the iconic smiley face image by encouraging people to act kindly and make a person smile.The theme for World Smile Day 2024 is ‘Do an act of kindness.
International Day against Breast Cancer
October 19 is dedicated to create awareness about breast cancer, its diagnosis and treatment. It is aimed at educating people on how to detect breast cancer early enough before it becomes unmanageable. The pink ribbon is used to create awareness about the cause.The theme for World Breast Cancer Day in 2024 is “No one should face breast cancer alone.
United Nations Day
United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
