A Gen Z playlist
Yesterday was World Music Day! I took time to review my Spotify playlist to check out songs that made my top song list this year, 2024. I am an erratic music love that listens to music across all genres to appreciate the beauty and art. Lately, I have immersed myself in listening to romantic songs with soulful lyrics. Check out what are my top picks for this year!
1. Joseph O’ Brien featuring Kolby Koloff – ‘Like that you love me’
“You’re the rhythm where my heart goes
Yeah, I’m spinning in your galaxy
Dancing to your tempo everywhere that I go
I never needed no permission
Yeah, you listen when I speak my mind
And there’s no competition when I keep reminiscing“
Joseph O’Brien is known for his soulful lyrics. The Christian artiste does not sing from a shallow perspective, his lyrics are carefully curated with the right words. Collaborating with Kolby Koloff accentuated the beauty of the songwriting. In this song, he appreciates his lover’s love. He soaks himself in the reality of lover’s love. This song didn’t have to do much to make 2024 song list.
The beautiful song lyrics is accompanied by a hip pop beat one that you can clap your hands and nod your head to. You can also cook up an acapella dance step to it.
Joseph O’Brien is currently a signee in Toby Mac’s Gotee Label. Raised by musical parents, Joseph featured in America’s Got Finals till the quarter finals. He finds music as something he does not grow tired of and is excited to continue ” his music and faith”.
2. Myles Smith- ” My Home” , “Stargazing”
One would say Myles Smith went to the studio this year to record songs for wedding parties and entrances. His songs brew the interest of being love. Stargazing was released on Tony Music on May 10, 2024 but prior to this, Myles took to his Instagram pages to create awareness about the song. The song won the heart of people even before it was released.
Time stood still

I see my whole life
Stargazing is a perfect song for a wedding entrance. It highlights the beauty of love and the rush of dopamine one feels. In this song, the personae encourages his lover to love him indefinitely.

I chose another of Myles Smith ‘s songs to make my best songs list. My Home is my 2024 top song of comfort. It explains the peace one feels with their lover. Myles Smith sang in words of reassurance and unexplainable peace that comes with the blissfulness of love. So when next you’re creating a video mashup of you and your lover, use this song!

3. Gavn! – Open Arms(Hallelujah)
Gavn! worked the wonders of expression in this song. He explains the peace he felt after meeting Jesus, his open arms. Despite the tribulations and grief the personae in this song has suffered, he has ‘grown so far from where we started’.
Listening to this song, I realised the imperfections of humans and how we can lose our way. Life is not free from tribulations. But what it is most important is we finding our way back to salvation. And it is tested and proven that we cannot save ourselves.

4. Benson Bonne – ” Beautiful Things”
Please stay! I want you I need you, O God! I can argue that a large percentage of social media users have heard this lyric one time or the other. Particularly, I had a roommate who played this song on repeat when she lost a loved one. The release of the song synced in time with when she lost her dear one This song made her so emotional as well as everyone around her.
But this Benson Bonne ‘s song is not primarily for grief. The personae in the song is admonishing God not to take his love away and that part of the song is a force with the bass guitars and elevated beat. He realises that people’s stay on Earth is ephemeral. This song was actually one of 2024 top songs so far.
The In the Stars singer is quite a sensational songwriter and singer. The multi- instrumentalist was raised in Monroe, Washington used TikTok to raise brand awareness before he was signed to Night Street Records.
5. Anendlessocean – Love Practitioner
AEO this year started releasing love songs after releasing gospel songs last year. He backed it up by saying he is in the season. To the lovebirds in the house, this is one is specially for you. This song highlights the vulnerability that comes with being in love and it definitely would take you to the dance floor. The World Music Day reminds me of indigenous songwriters like Anendlessocean that are dynamic at what they do.
This is the end of my list – not the end just the end of this write-up. It does not have to be World Music Day to appreciate good music. The list is not arranged in order of likeness- it is just an order of randomness. I solely created a playlist with some of these songs included.
