Yemi My Lover recounts disappointment after Olamide used his name without compensation

Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yemi Ayebo, widely known as Yemi My Lover, has shared a personal encounter involving popular rapper Olamide, who mentioned his name in a song without offering any form of compensation.

In a recent interview, Yemi said he initially felt overjoyed when he heard Olamide use his name in a track, believing it was a sign of divine favor.

“Olamide was the first to sing with my name. I was very happy when I heard the song. I thanked God. God blessed my name, that’s why people used it to sing. Davido also sang with my name, many people made use of it,” he said.

According to Yemi, Fuji star Pasuma later brought up the issue, asking whether Olamide had ever shown appreciation for using the name. When Yemi responded that he had never even met the rapper, Pasuma helped facilitate a phone call between the two.

“Pasuma said, ‘Yemo, did Olamide compensate you for using your name in his song?’ I said no and that I had never met him before, we don’t have each other’s number. Then Pasuma called him on the phone.”

Yemi said Olamide apologized during the conversation and suggested they talk more. However, he claimed that all efforts to reconnect afterward were ignored.

“Pasuma gave me his number and I called Olamide for more than six months and he never picked my call. I sent him messages, he never read them or replied, so I let him be,” he said.

Yemi My Lover became a household name in the early 2000s after the success of his romantic Yoruba musical film Yemi My Lover. His influence in Yoruba pop culture has since inspired mentions in songs by major artists like Olamide and Davido.

Olamide referenced him in his 2015 hit Bobo, while Davido did the same in his breakout 2012 track Dami Duro.
