The difference between a mentor and a coach is that a coach works one-on-one with you for a particular event or goal, whereas a mentor mentors you over an extended period in a coaching relationship. 

There are specific areas a coach works with you, like being a life coach, career coach, business coach, or relationship coach, and this work is usually short-term because it is goal-oriented. Once you achieve the goal, his work is done.

However, a mentor will take a holistic view of your life and career, whereas a coach — especially if commissioned by an organization — will focus on specific issues and areas of development.

A coach can help you to set goals, develop strategies, and stay accountable to your aspirations.

While reading for a degree, it is also important you surround yourself with a supportive and like-minded community of peers. Your peers or colleagues are people you meet through clubs, organizations, meetups, and online communities.
