Zamalek sack Peseiro after Confederation Cup exit and poor league run

Egyptian giants Zamalek have officially cut ties with former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro after a series of disappointing performances.

The club’s decision followed a frustrating 2-2 draw against National Bank, which seemed to be the final straw.

In a brief statement released on Monday, Zamalek confirmed the departure of their Portuguese coach just months into his tenure.

“Zamalek and Jose Peseiro agree to end the relationship by mutual consent. We wish the best in future,” the club announced.

Peseiro, who took over in February, had been expected to bring renewed energy to the team. However, results under his watch failed to inspire confidence both domestically and continentally. Notably, Zamalek’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup at the quarter-final stage stung their fans deeply.

Adding to the frustration, the club has struggled in the Egyptian Premier League, sitting third behind arch-rivals Al Ahly and high-flying Pyramids FC. Supporters had hoped for a stronger showing, especially after Peseiro’s appointment generated initial excitement.

Despite his best efforts, Peseiro’s record did little to save his job as criticism mounted with every lacklustre display. During his brief spell, the 65-year-old managed 17 games in total, securing only seven wins along with eight draws and two defeats.

While many felt he needed more time to fully implement his strategies, the club’s hierarchy chose to act swiftly. Their decision underlines Zamalek’s desire to remain highly competitive on all fronts and avoid further slip-ups.

Zamalek now face the tough task of finding a suitable replacement capable of stabilising the squad and reigniting their title ambitions for subsequent seasons.
