‘Can You Fix Nigeria’ Series – Episode 9

In October 2020, after observing the drift that Nigeria was experiencing, the slow response to the COVID crisis and the general hopelessness of the citizenry, Culbeat Foundation initiated a series of non-partisan policy talks to re-evaluate the problems facing Nigeria.

There are strict rules in place to avoid partisanship and online abuse. To open our minds in order to discuss issues concerning Nigeria. This series is tagged the Can You Fix Nigeria Challenge.

Episode 9 – Judicial Reforms

In Fix Nigeria – Episode 9, I speak with Mrs. Adeola Sunmola about the judiciary and judicial reforms in Nigeria.

Firstly, we discuss the Nigeria legal system, the basis of Nigerian laws and the hierarchy of the court systems. We look at the appeal system and identify the key players.

Finally, we review other relevant issues such as prison reforms, the sizing of the Supreme Court, regionalisation of courts, remuneration for judges, the composition of the National Judicial Council (NJC) and selection of judges.

This episode’s guest

Mrs. Adeola Sunmola is a lawyer and consultant. She graduated from the Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye in 2004 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Lagos. From there, she was called to the Nigerian Bar.

Adeola also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Finance from Middlesex University, UK in 2015.

She is a partner at the Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie Law Practice. Sunmola has a wealth of experience in banking & finance; power, projects & infrastructure, as well as compliance & investigations.
