5 must-haves when travelling to Kano State

Travelling to Kano, while exciting, can be a very daunting experience. Especially if it’s your first time in the North. If you haven’t been to Kano in a while, nothing will prepare you for the inevitabilities that are now part and parcel of this mega city.

Below are five essential things you absolutely need to have when traveling to Kano, whether for a long or a short time stay.

1. Sun Protection

Whether in the form of clothing or skincare products, your skin needs to be protected from the scorching Kano sun. Sunscreen, then a hat. If you are hijab-wearing, you can use a niqab without sunscreen. But under no circumstance should you skip sunscreen.

2. Power Bank

For the most part Kano, especially at night seems to be going through a blackout. Sounds of generators whirring can be heard all over the town. To be safe, carry a portable power source because there are parts of Kano that go 72 hours or more without electricity. You don’t want the battery on your phone to run out.

3. Money

It is common sense to travel with money to take care of expenses but don’t travel to Kano with money that will be enough for you to just get buy. Get more! You will definitely see and buy more than you intend to at the markets.

4. Rechargeable fan

Kano is generally hot and humid, except during Harmattan. Get a hand fan that you can carry around or better still a portable bedside fan to make the nights more bearable especially when there are power cuts.

5. Light clothing

To deal with the heat and sun, it is safe to pack light, modest clothes that cover up almost the entire body. That way, when there is breeze, it carries everything around and clothes will not seem like a burden.

Bonus tip: Stay hydrated!!!
