Adulthood: The heartache of growing up

Adulthood is primarily about payment of bills, experiencing rejection and restructuring the strategy of a failed stratagem.

Adulthood is about growing up to learn, unlearn and relearn quintessential ideologies for one’s development.

A quick throwback story, I can remember when I was 10 years old in Mathematics class thinking of how I was going to become a superstar and tour the world once I become an adult.

I wanted to touch the clouds and soar in the firmaments; interesting, didn’t know that my mind was playing tricks on me.

Life indeed has a mind of its own.

I could have enjoyed Mathematics class and paid more attention because life is primarily about calculations and analysis. In adulthood, you are usually calculating how you spent your money and thinking of the move that will make you more money.

Adulthood has been relatively interesting, some days the sun shines on your face in the warmest of places, other days, you are gloomy, feeling alone in the dark running from your own reflection.

You are battling your imposter syndrome; you are doubting if you are ever going to be good enough for anything or anybody. Heck, you look up to the sun and wonder if your life has a meaning.

Questions upon questions, the heart of man keeps aching from the shackles in a man’s mind.

“Am I supposed to be here?” you soliloquize as you sip from the cup of garri.

As a child, you are opportune to dream and aspire, as an adult though, you have an in-depth perception to things that you desire and wish for. Childhood is an illusion, you are protected and guided, in adulthood you are 1001% responsible for your actions and inactions…

In adulthood, you are susceptible to heartache and brokenness, unlike a child who heals faster after falling off a bicycle, an adult tends to hold on to experiences that for as long he/she lives.

Best friends become strangers; lovers walk around with alarm system in their hearts so as to avoid hanky panky of getting played.

Adulthood is everything and more.

Adulthood is about you, however, it isn’t just about you.

It is about family, it is about career, it is about the nation of your residency, it is about the novelty, it is about everything and more… the list is endless.

I pray to God everyday that I make the right choice about my life, because, this life is whatever you make of it.
