Liverpool close in on Man City, defeat Southampton 2-1

Liverpool have ensured that the winner of the Premier League trophy 2021-22 season will be decided on the final day.

This is following a 2-1 win at St Mary’s against Southampton.

Liverpool went into the tie at St. Mary’s with a need to secure maximum points and Jurgen Klopp’s men did the job. s it stands, they are still chasing the quadruple after winning all the domestic trophies so far, with the Premier League being the remaining one.

They are now on 89 points, – a point behind the defending champions, Manchester City.

Liverpool did the needful by coming from behind. A defeat would hand the title to Manchester City. Even a draw would effectively end the challenge because of their inferior goal difference.

Nathan Redmond gave Southampton a 13th-minute lead with a curling right-foot shot beyond Alisson.

Despite making nine changes from the side that won the FA Cup by beating Chelsea on penalties at Wembley on Saturday, Liverpool once again showed their resilience and reserves of strength.

Takumi Minamino levelled before half-time with a thumping drive against the club where he spent a spell on loan last season.

The pressure built after the break and Liverpool took a deserved lead after 67 minutes through Joel Matip. The defender sent an instinctive looping header over Saints’ keeper Alex McCarthy.

City will still retain the title with victory over Aston Villa at Etihad Stadium. Liverpool have pushed them all the way again and ensured the fight will go down to the wire.
