FAAN Releases COVID-19 Guidelines Ahead of Local Flight Resumption


Ahead of the July 8 resumption date for the operations of local flights, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has released new procedural guidelines for air travelers and other airport users.

The Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika had in a tweet announced that local flight operations will commence in Lagos and Abuja Airports on Wednesday July 8, after declaring the airports 95 percent ready.

The new guidelines was disclosed by FAAN’s spokesperson and General Manager Public Affairs; Henrietta Yakubu. According to the FAAN’s image maker, he new guidelines were part of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at protecting all stakeholders and preventing further spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Yakubu, who described the guidelines as ā€œNew Normalā€, saying that departing passengers must arrive the airport properly kitted with their face masks on.

Apart from that, passengers must ensure a minimum of one point five meters physical distancing just as Aviation Medical/Port Health personnel are directed to screen each passenger and ensure the use of face mask.

Other measures stipulated are that those travelling with pets must get necessary clearance from Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services while they must insist on disinfection of all luggages before entry into the departure halls.

Passengers were also required to wash their hands as often as possible with the provision of hand sanitiser for them before entrance, at the waiting halls/lounges and pre boarding gates.

The belongings to be disinfected includes footwears, which must be sanitised by foot mats placed at all entrances to the terminal building.

FAAN also stated that passengers arriving must observe physical distancing on disembarking from airplanes and the same as they board the Co-Buses, adding that hand sanitizers would be provided in the buses.

Additionally, at the baggage claim area, physical distancing protocols must be observed and hand sanitiser will also be provided as well.

As part of the strict measures, Yakubu revealed that disinfected trolleys would be available for passengers.

While stating that all COVID-19 protocols must be observed while undergoing Customs check, Yakubu said passengers must exit the halls and head straight to the car park for pick up.

She also warned that if any passengers will speak to anyone, it should be a properly tagged Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer.

ā€œPhysical distancing would be maintained while waiting to be screened by personnel of port health services among others.

ā€œIn addition to the above guidelines, passengers are required to observe SOCIAL DISTANCING and make use of the floor markings at the security screening area.

They must also comply with all other security guidelines as laid down by officials of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) department,” she added.
