Flood kills 21 in Abia communities


The Abia State Government has confirmed that 21 people have died in various communities across the state due to flood.

The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sunday Jackson, confirmed the figure on Friday.

Jackson spoke during the distribution of relief materials to some victims by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The state official recalled that Abia was one of the 32 states predicted by the Nigeria Hydrological Services to suffer flood.

The SEMA Executive Secretary also stated the state recorded flooding in 16 of the 17 local government areas.

NEMA commiserates with Abia state

Meanwhile, the NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed, who was represented by the Head of Owerri Operations Office, Ifeanyi Nnaji, commiserated with Abia over the disaster.

Ahmed recalled that the 2022 Flood Outlook forecasted that 233 LGAs in 32 states and the FCT were within highly risk areas.

No less than 212 LGAs in 35 states across the Federal Republic of Nigeria were within moderately probable flood risk areas.

Recall that the spare of flood incidents in the country have been on the rise for some time now as citizens continue to lament the unfortunate disaster. The state government also commiserates with families of the 21 people who died in the flood in the different communities in Abia.

Heavy rain have hit huge swathes of the country and affected people from every walk of life. 

Floods caused by large torrents of rain and bad infrastructure have largely affected vast swathes of the country. This has triggered fear of high inflation and food shortages.
