5 Types of voters in Nigeria’s election

Voters

Nigeria is currently holding her presidential, senatorial and house of assembly elections. While results are still pouring in from different polling units nationwide, let us take a look at five types of voters in this election.

The optimists

This year’s election is historic because there is a formidable third force, unlike previous elections. Asides Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), there is a Peter Obi who is contesting under the platform of the Labour Party (LP). Many people, especially the youth, see hope in Obi. With a track record of defeating greed and having a dislike for wasting money, many Nigerians are optimistic and feel he is the right man for the job. Hence, the voters turn out is massive. Nevertheless, Tinubu and Atiku supporters are optimistic they can pull off a win.

Bullies

This election has witnessed a lot of bullying from different persons. The supporters of the three leading political parties have been verbally attacking themselves consistently. During the Labour Party presidential campaign in Lagos in February 11, their supporters were attacked and their cars destroyed. Obi and LP repeatedly made complaints about the attack and the Police promised to look into cases. In other areas, APC and PDP have also experienced attacks.

Ballot snatches

The norm with Nigerian elections is ballot snatching. Inasmuch as the security agents said they were ready for the elections, their responses to violent cases were slow. Lagos was chaotic and had several ballot boxes destroyed. Nevertheless, the voters stood their ground that they would still vote. And they did.

Prayer warriors

Nigerians are very religious and they have no limit to what they call on God for. As election day approached, supporters of the different candidates prayed for a win for their candidate. Several churches nationwide held prayer and fasting sessions for the election. The people believe so much in prayers and are hopeful for answers to their prayers.

Watch keepers

Presently, the election results are still being collated at the polling units. Although some results have been counted, it has not been uploaded into the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal yet. The people are worried and are keeping watch at their polling units. Some people have gone home and are now monitoring the election results online.

There is anxiety on who will eventually become the country’s next president. Will it be Atiku, Obi, or Tinubu? INEC will tell!
