Premier League: Liverpool put seven past defenceless Manchester United

Liverpool produced an absolute class of a performance to completely destroy Manchester United 7-0 in their English Premier League encounter on Sunday.

It was an evening to remember for Mohamed Salah who became Liverpool’s all-time Premier League top scorer, surpassing Robbie Fowler.

Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez all scored braces before substitute Roberto Firmino completed the rout.

United has transformed into a more impressive side since the start of the season under Dutch manager Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils have been praised repeatedly for a string of commendable performances as they also recently won a first trophy in six years.

The Old Trafford outfit were triumphant last Sunday, beating Newcastle 2-0 in the EFL Cup final.

However, they were made to suffer today with Liverpool unleashing their attacking venom with reckless abandon.

Liverpool took charge of the Premier League contest against United from the blast of the whistle. Jurgen Klopp’s boys showed more intent and looked more promising in the attacking third.

Although Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford missed good chances, it was Cody Gakpo who drew the first blood when he lashed onto a fine through pass from Andy Robertson two minutes before the break.

The second period was a complete delight for the home team but proved to be an unpleasant, regrettable one for the visitors.

Two minutes into the half, Uruguayan striker Núñez headed past David de Gea from a Harvey Elliott cross.

Salah troubled down the right flank before dribbling past Lisandro Martinez to set up Gakpo who netted Liverpool’s third three minutes later.

The Egyptian then scored the hosts’ fourth of the evening when he completed a swift, beautiful counter-attack. Núñez scored another header as he directed captain Jordan Henderson’s cross into the net to make it 5-0.

The demolition continued as Liverpool looked undone with the business of the day when Salah completed his brace to net his side’s sixth and become Liverpool’s highest goalscorer in the Premier League with 129 goals.

The former Basel and Chelsea player is also Liverpool’s highest goalscorer against Manchester United with 11 goals – 10 of those coming in his past five games.

Interestingly, the highest scoring Brazilian in Premier League history Roberto Firmino – who has announced he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season – completed a fantastic game for the Reds as he scored the seventh from close range.
