Politics: Hope in Tinubu’s performance still in crescendo
Amidst the increase in petrol (PMS) prices, Nigerians are increasingly placing their hopes on the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Since he [Tinubu] assumed office on May 29, 2023, he had been associated with several initiatives and policy proposals to address Nigeria’s problems. However, some of Tinubu’s agenda during the campaign and inauguration was to reform the country’s economy.
NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Tinubu emphasized the need for economic reforms to stimulate growth and address poverty in Nigeria which includes diversification of the economy, promotion of private sector investment, job creation, and infrastructure development.

Recently, he approved the new Electricity Act, which replaces the 2005 Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act. The Electricity Act was first passed in July 2022 in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigerians believed that the approval was part of his power sector reform. NRTC WEEKLY found out that Tinubu advocated for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s power sector to address the longstanding electricity challenges in the country. His agenda focuses on improving generation, transmission, and distribution capacities, as well as encouraging private sector participation in the sector.
More so, he expressed the importance of quality education as a means to empower Nigerian youth and enhance human capital development, aiming to improve access to education, upgrade school infrastructure, and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
Tinubu meeting according to some Nigerians focuses on majorly his agenda, especially the need for improved healthcare services in Nigeria.
“He has been working on his agenda which includes reforms to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, increase access to quality healthcare, and ensure the availability of essential drugs and medical supplies. Anti-Corruption was also promised by him to advocate for the fight against corruption, considering it a major hindrance to Nigeria’s development. The agenda includes measures to strengthen anti-corruption institutions, promote transparency and accountability in governance, and enforce stricter penalties for corrupt practices.
“National Security which includes insurgency, terrorism, and communal conflicts steps had been taken by him.”
Nigerians added.
As Nigeria looks ahead to the next presidential election, the hope placed in Tinubu’s performance reflects a desire for a leader who can effectively address pressing issues such as security, the economy, infrastructure, and social welfare. Nigerians are optimistic about the potential positive impact he could have on the nation’s future.
Business: Soaring Petrol Prices Take a Toll on Nigerian Citizens
The faces of frustrated Nigerians reflect a deep sense of despair and exasperation. Furrowed brows, clenched jaws, and weary eyes depict their struggles as they grapple with the burden of increased petrol prices, showcasing the profound impact on their daily lives and overall well-being.
NRTC WEEKLY gathered Nigeria, which is heavily reliant on oil exports, has been grappling with the adverse effects of skyrocketing petrol prices in recent times following the announcement of fuel subsidy removal.
The continuous rise in fuel costs has significantly impacted the lives of its citizens, exacerbating economic challenges and pushing the already burdened population to its limits. NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the consequences of the hike in petrol prices have inflicted a severe blow on the Nigerian economy, which heavily relies on the transportation sector.
As fuel costs rise, the transportation industry faces a surge in operational expenses, leading to an increase in fares for buses, taxis, and other means of public transportation. This ripple effect ultimately burdens the citizens, who are left with limited options and increased financial strain.
Findings of NRTC WEEKLY show that many states have started increasing the minimum wage as well as reducing the number of days civil servants have to come to the office in a week to cushion the effect of the hike.
In the same vein, the escalation in petrol prices significantly contributes to the increasing cost of living in Nigeria. As fuel costs soar, the prices of essential goods and services also witness an upsurge.
The transportation of goods becomes costlier, forcing businesses to pass on the additional expenses to consumers — this surge in prices further erodes the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians, making it challenging to make ends meet, NRTC WEEKLY confirmed.
Further findings by NRTC WEEKLY show that not only do civil servants or transporters suffer, but small businesses, the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, are hit hard by the rising petrol prices. Many micro and small enterprises rely on generators due to unreliable power supply, and with increased fuel costs, their operational expenses escalate dramatically.
This scenario leaves small business owners with limited options, often forcing them to cut down on staff, reduce production, or even close down their businesses entirely. The resultant job losses and economic slowdown further worsen the already dire situation.
However, the impact of soaring petrol prices extends beyond the economic realm and affects the overall social fabric of Nigerian society.
“The increased cost of transportation hampers access to education and healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups, students, patients, and low-income earners find it increasingly difficult to travel to schools, hospitals, and workplaces, respectively and this disparity in access further widens the socio-economic divide and perpetuates inequality.”
Nigerians who took to their social media platforms lamented.
NRTC WEEKLY gathered that while some Nigerians are saying the hike in petrol prices has placed a heavy burden on them, some believe that was the only way the country can regain its stand as a country with the best economy.
