In Nigeria, the primary purpose of going on dates is typically centered around dining out. Even though other places such as parks, gardens, and other interesting venues are conducive for dates, most Nigerians still prefer restaurants. These places can also provide ample opportunities for meaningful conversations, rather than solely focusing on eating excessively or engaging in gluttonous behaviors.
Nigerians do not just decide to eat out, yes it may be true that we are hungry people, I mean 63% of persons living in Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). But there is more to this culture.
First of all, food provides an avenue for dates to try out new meals
A date in a restaurant essentially gives people the opportunity to explore and try out new meals, meals they usually don’t eat in their houses. Exploring traditional dishes, whether it’s the spicy aroma of pepper soup or the exquisite flavors of moi moi, brings dates closer to their roots. Nigerian dates are an immersive experience that showcases the country’s diverse culinary traditions, creating a deeper connection between people through the love of food.
Secondly, food serves as an icebreaker
When it comes to breaking the ice on a date, Nigerians know that food is the ultimate conversation starter. Discussing the intricate flavors of a well-prepared meal brings people closer together. From dissecting the texture of pounded yam to analyzing the perfect egusi soup ratio, these food-related conversations create a unique bond that no awkward silence can withstand.

Thirdly, food is a big distraction
If you don’t like your date, just distract yourself with eating the food till you’re ready to leave. He may be talking about his experience, likes, life goals and dreams, but you don’t even want to care. Apart from being hungry, you are also not really interested in him. Food, then, can be your saviour from this boring talk. Now imagine the pain a date will inflict on herself if she goes to parks, beaches, cinemas, or gardens.
A date may take some hours, so it’s just justifiable to eat
If you do not eat on a date, perhaps it seems there isn’t a strong connection between you and the other person. While it is true that people can take advantage of the free food and drinks, and whether it’s swimming, hiking, or simply going for a leisurely walk, it seems like dates always feel the need to have something to munch on, even if it’s just snacks. Can you imagine engaging in hours of activity without feeling hungry?
And finally, going out on a date in a restaurant is a way to know how rich the other person is
It’s just good to test the waters before knowing what you’re getting yourself into. The amount a man can spend on food in a restaurant determines how generous or rich he is, I mean what’s the other way to find out whether he is a generous man. Personally, I think I love food, great food, any woman that can’t spend her money freely and generously on food for my sake is just a red flag.
