NAAT frowns upon 200% fee hike by federal universities, says it will lead to students dropout

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has expressed dissatisfaction over the recent 200 per cent increase in fees in federal universities, warning that it could result in students quitting their studies.

NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, shared this information in a statement after the association’s 52nd National Executive Council meeting. The statement was provided to journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

ā€œNAAT is worried and concerned too with the recent development regarding the increase in fees and charges in our Federal Institutions, particularly Universities.”

ā€œThis development may compel many of our students to drop out of school, occasioned by the current economic hardship facing parents and lack of adequate resources to meet up with economic demands.”

ā€œWe are aware that over 200% increase in fees and charges are now being imposed by Universities authorities. NAAT, therefore, appeals to the government to consider the plight of the poor and rescind the decision by returning to the status quo until the loan issue is properly addressed.ā€

NAAT also expressed concern that the dissolution of university governing boards would hinder the progress and advancement of Nigeria’s higher education.

They argued that it would negatively impact various aspects such as promotions, incentives, welfare, contracts, project documentation, and practical and research laboratory facilities in tertiary institutions.
