Wimbledon: Christopher Eubanks upsets Stefanos Tsitsipas; Djokovic, Medvedev reach quarter-finals

Christopher Eubanks stunned Greek opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6 7-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 to progress into the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Ranked No 43 in the world, Eubanks’ remarkable run at SW 18 continued on Monday as he beat fifth seed Tsitsipas in a five-set thriller. It’s also the American’s first Grand Slam quarter-final.

The 27-year-old has now remarkably beaten British No 1 Cameron Norrie and Tsitsipas en route to the last eight.

Eubanks has never previously gone beyond the second round of a major but will now face third seed Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev qualified for the quarters for the first time as Czech opponent Jiri Lehecka retired.

Coco Gauff, who was eliminated in the first round, was among the crowd that rose to cheer Eubanks.

‘I feel like I’m living a dream right now. This is absolutely insane. It’s surreal, it’s unbelievable, I can’t believe it,” the American said.

Djokovic reach Wimbledon quarter-finals

Novak Djokovic reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals after recording a 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-4 win over Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

Djokovic was ahead by two sets before their match was halted on Sunday night due to the 11pm curfew.

Although the 23-time Grand Slam champion dropped the third set, he went on to win the encounter against Hurkacz.

The 36-year-old remains unbeaten in Wimbledon in recent years. He has won the men’s title at the past four Championships and not lost a completed match at the All England Club since retiring injured in 2016.

Djokovic indeed found the game against Hurkacz tougher than the other matches he has played this season.

After eliminating Hurkacz, he will now battle Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev in his 14th last eight match at Wimbledon.

“I don’t recall the last time I felt this miserable in returning games thanks to Hubert’s powerful and accurate serves,” said Djokovic.

“It is one of the best serves in the world and is hard to read.

“It was not really an enjoyable match for me, this match could have gone either way.”
