Letsile Tebogo sets 200m Africa Record at London Diamond League

In a sold-out London Athletics Meet in Stratford, London, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo ran an African Record and huge personal best of 19.50s to finish second behind America’s Noah Lyles in the 200m.

The race was one of the most-discussed races pre-meet and it definitely lived up to expectations. Each of the top three produced amazing runs of their own.

Tebogo, in lane eight, finished second with a bursting run that wowed the crowd. Meanwhile, Zharnel Hughes finished third in 19.73s in front of an elated home crowd.

20-year-old Letsile Tebogo was born in Kanye, a village in southern Botswana. It is located 83 kilometres (52 mi) south-west of the country’s capital, Gaborone.

He won the gold medal in the 100 metres and a silver in the 200 metres at both the 2021 and 2022 World Athletics Under-20 Championships.

In 2021, Tebogo became the first Botswana athlete in history to win the 100m title at any World Championships level. He is also the 200m 2022 African champion, becoming the youngest winner of this title in competition history.
