John Mikel Obi bags government appointment in Nigeria


Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi has received an appointment as Honorary Adviser on Sports to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.

The Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyan Bere confirmed Mikel Obi’s appointment on Thursday.

Mikel was born in Jos and began his football career at Plateau United. He then joined Norwegian club Lyn Oslo in 2004.

The 36-year-old former will be expected to bring his wealth of experience into the development of sports in Plateau State.

The former Chelsea star enjoyed a stellar career at club and international levels, winning many trophies.

In 2022, a year before his honorary appointment, Mikel Obi announced his retirement from football.

During his playing days, he won major trophies with Chelsea. These include the prestigious Uefa Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, League Cup and the FA Cup.

Mikel was also part of the Super Eagles squad that claimed the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy. Nigeria, under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi, defeated Burkina Faso in the AFCON final 10 years ago.

He made a total of 91 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, scoring six goals.
