The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed its standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic immediately.
Its President, Omar Alieu Touray, announced this decision while presenting ECOWAS’ resolution on the Niger coup during at the ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
Additionally, the organization has urged the African Union (AU), partnering nations, and institutions to back the sub-regional organization’s resolution.
ECOWAS stated that all attempts at dialogue with the Niger Republic’s military junta have been met with defiance by the coup leaders. This is due to their strong disapproval of the continued detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

The resolution includes the following points:
- The committee of the Chief of Defence Staff is directed to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force, along with all its components.
- The deployment of its standby force is ordered to reestablish constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
