Nigerian recording artiste, Damini Ogulu, who is better known as Burna Boy, has insinuated that the Recording Academy added the new āBest African Music Performanceā category to the Grammys because of him.
Burna Boy, whose album, āTwice As Tallā won the āBest Global Music Albumā category at the 63rd Grammy Awards, said he feels āresponsibleā for the creation of the new African music category.
The self-styled āAfrican Giantā stated this in a recent interview with Los Angeles Times.

He, however, wondered if the newly created āBest African Music Performanceā would hold much prestige.

Burna Boy said, āI do feel somewhat responsible for the new āBest African Music Performanceā category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? Iām waiting to see.ā
News Round The Clock (NRTC) recalls that the Grammys in June created a category for āBest African Music Performance.ā
The award organizers said the category is open to both contemporary and traditional music from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, etc.
