Just when people thought things couldn’t get worse for Barcelona after suffering an 8-2 defeat in the hands of Bayern Munich, Lionel Messi submitted a transfer request, expressing his desire to leave the club.
Some argued it was a power-play between the club’s president, Josep Bartomeu and the club captain. They even said it was a ploy to try and force the president to step down. His tenure doesn’t end until 2021.
Messi has been vocal in times past about his unhappiness with the way the club was being run. So, he wanted serious change in management from the very top.
Although Messi’s current contract expires in summer of 2021, there is a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club for free at the end of any season.

The club argued that this clause had expired as he’s to make his desire to leave the club known before 10th of June. They said he could only leave the club if his 700m Euro release clause is paid.
Clubs with financial muscle
Taking Barcelona was out of the question, as the case could drag on for months and become unpleasant to both the club and the player. However, the question must be asked, “Who would pay Messi’s exorbitant release fee?

The financial impact of COVID 19 on football clubs have cut these numbers to the barest minimum. Of the clubs that have shown strong interest in signing Messi in the past, Paris Saint Germain and Manchester City might be the only clubs financially capable to pay up.
Financial fair play rules could also inhibit the ability and willingness of these clubs to pay his release clause. Realistically, no club in Europe would be able to pay his clause and also pay his massive wages.
In light of the foregoing, Messi has decided to see out his contract at Barcelona. In a recent statement, it appears that despite his decision to stay, his stance on how the club is being run remains the same.
Messi has returned to training with Barcelona. He is expected to run out his contract and plan for a new adventure next summer.
