Big Brother Naija, Erica, and Observations

The Big Brother Naija show is arguably the most-watched television show in Nigeria presently. The show has attracted millions of viewers in the past years.

On July 19, it started its fifth season to the excitement of its fans. Twenty housemates made entry into the house as they began their journey of fame and adventure.

The show has gathered much criticism from notable personalities and individuals in general. While some persons dubbed the show a total waste of time, another school of thought decried the rate of immorality portrayed on the show. It is pertinent to note that BBNaija, as the show is popularly called, is rated 18+.

The show is in its eighth week. Many events have occurred in the past weeks which have made viewers pitch their tent with their favorite housemate.

Erica, one of the contestants on the show got disqualified last Sunday. Her disqualification was expected as she had broken the rules of the house repeatedly.

Among other things, she is known for winning the ‘Head of House’ game twice and her romantic affair with Kiddwaya.

Erica, a specimen for emotional intelligence

During her stay in the house, Erica was cool and showed her acting prowess during the tasks. However, she goofed along the line because she allowed her emotions to rule over her.

An important point to note is that BBNaija is a game-show. The housemates came into the house for a competition. Staying focused would have helped Erica pull through, but her emotions failed her.

From the point she became physically attracted to fellow contestant Kiddwaya, her chances of staying in the game were marred. And following her romp with him, it was evident that it would be difficult to get her act together.

Secondly, discipline is a vital factor to staying in a game. Beyond losing focus, her approach to issues showed a lack of discipline.

Initially, she stated that Kiddwaya was just her friend. However, she could not control how she felt for him and became love-struck. Meanwhile, it appears that Kiddwaya only saw her as a friend.

Thirdly, our choice of words matters, especially when we are angry. Erica could not control her tongue. She lashed out at another housemate – Laycon – and made threatening statements to him. She apologized the next day which was quite remarkable. Nevertheless, the ability to hold down her emotions would have helped to avoid unnecessary drama.

But then again, the show is about drama. Right?

Room for improvement

Despite the fact that we would like to criticize Erica for her behavior in the house, we must also be on the lookout for her positive side. Ample opportunities abound for her if she embraces emotional intelligence.

At first, Erica appeared like a strong-willed individual. Over the course of her stay in the house, her true nature was revealed. She was easy to detect no matter how hard she tried.

She has enjoyed the support of her fans throughout her stay in the house. With this platform given to her, she can continue with her exploits in the things she has chosen for herself.

Erica’s stay on the show may have ended but it is a stepping stone for greater opportunities if she stays focused, applies emotional intelligence, and remains disciplined.
