Darwin Nunez late double stun Newcastle as Liverpool secure comeback win

Darwin Nunez’s brace off the bench won the game for ten-man Liverpool against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The Reds were bettered for most of the encounter after Virgil van Dijk’s first-half red card unsettled their rhythm.

Van Dijk was sent off shortly after former Everton man Anthony Gordon pounced on the ball to net the opener in the 25th minute.

Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson kept Liverpool in the game with a stunning save, denying Miguel Almiron’s ferocious left-footed shot. After the break, the Paraguayan forward also hit the post after reeling away from Alexis MacAllister and substitute Joe Gomez.

Following his introduction, Nunez took a first time shot that flew past Nick Pope in goal with nine minutes remaining.

Three minutes into stoppage time, Nunez was at it again. He clinically dispatched the second goal in similar fashion to the first. The goal silenced the home crowd, being an unbelievable sight at the St James’ Park.

Newcastle pay heavy price for missed chances

Newcastle had enough chances to extend their lead but were wasteful in front of goal.

The Magpies were made to pay for missing crucial opportunities before Liverpool equalised.

Harvey Barnes, who replaced goal scorer Gordon, was particularly selfish and should have released the ball for an unmarked Callum Wilson when the scoreline stood at 1-0.

Jurgen Klopp said after the comeback win: “Oh my God, how I liked that!

“At half-time, I told them if we could change the result, it would be something we could tell our grandkids. I see mine in 10 days so I can tell him.”
