Sergio Ramos snubs Saudi, rejoins Sevilla 18 years after first spell


Spanish club Sevilla FC have reached an agreement to sign veteran defender Sergio Ramos on a one-year deal.

Ramos, an academy graduate of Sevilla, returns to the club 18 years after he joined Real Madrid as a 19-year-old.

He was a free agent after his time at Paris Saint-Germain. He attracted interests from Saudi Arabia but snubbed the big spending Arabs to reunite with Sevilla.

The 37-year-old player was born in Camas, a few kilometres from Sevilla city centre, on 30th March 1986. He signed for the Sevilla academy aged seven, progressing through the ranks before making his reserve-team debut aged 16, in the 2002/03 season.

The following season, Ramos made his first-team debut on 1st February 2004. He replaced Paco Gallardo in a 1-0 loss away at Deportivo La CoruƱa.

Having made seven appearances that season, he quickly established himself as a regular in the starting XI.

In total, Ramos made 49 appearances and scored three goals in his first spell.

After joining Real Madrid in the 2005/06 season, Ramos went on to score 101 goals in 671 appearances.

During his highly prolific and successful time at the capital, he claimed 22 winners’ medals at the club. These include five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League wins.

He later left Madrid and joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021. He scored six times in 58 appearances while with the French capital club.

At PSG, he won two Ligue 1 titles and one French Super Cup. He left the club on 30th June at the end of his contract.

Sergio Ramos is widely rated as one of the best defenders in the history of football. The defender is the most-capped player in the history of the Spanish national team. He has amassed an amazing 180 appearances for La Roja, scoring on 23 occasions for them.

Ramos featured at every World Cup and Euros between 2006 and 2018 – that’s seven tournaments altogether. He also made appearances at the Confederations Cup in 2009 and 2013.

He is a Euro tournament winner (2008, 2012) and a FIFA World Cup winner (2010) as well.
