Victor Osimhen becomes first Nigerian in 24 years nominated for Men’s Ballon d’Or


Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has been nominated alongside Mohamed Salah and Andre Onana for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

Osimhen also becomes the first Nigerian male player to be nominated for the prestigious award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

The Napoli striker netted 26 goals in the Serie A last term to help the club claim the Scudetto – their first in over three decades.

The 24-year-old, as well as Salah and Onana are among the four African players on the shortlist. Morocco and Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou is the other Africa player nominated.

Also, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi who and Treble winner Erling Haaland are both on the list.
