UNIJOS students protest against fee hike

UNIJOS students held up signs with different messages to express their demand

On Tuesday, students from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) protested against the increase in school fees and various additional charges imposed by the institution.

The students blocked the entrance to the university, and the Student Union Government (SUG) members took the lead in demanding that the school authorities roll back the fee hike.

They held up placards with different messages to express their demands. The students are calling for an immediate reversal of the fee increase, taking into account the tough economic conditions currently faced by people in the country.

The university’s school fees and other expenses were raised from N40,000 to N160,000 per academic session.

“As a union, we have been having serious engagements with the university authorities before it was not brought to N110,000,” stated Longmun Dakon, the president of the school’s Student Union Government, during an interview with Channels Television.

He expressed that the fee hike is “beyond the means of most students and is excessively high; as a result, many students may be forced to abandon their education.”

In the midst of the protests, the school’s Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Christopher Piwuna, assured the students that the authorities are aware of and concerned about the fee increase, and they are actively addressing the issue.

ā€œOur engagements have not yielded the results that you want. That is clear. But for us, we believe that discussions will always continue,ā€ he emphasized.
