It’s another edition of NRTC WEEKLY Roundup —in this week’s edition, we are focusing on five trending stories across the country.

Sport: Nigerians fire back for mocking their Starboy

Nigerian football fans have raised their voices in outrage against Napoli Football Club for an incident involving their star striker, Victor Osimhen. NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the controversy erupted after Napoli shared a TikTok video in which Osimhen was seen attempting to recreate his penalty miss during a match.

The video, intended as light-hearted content, took a different turn as it seemed to mock Osimhen’s missed penalty. NRTC WEEKLY observed that Nigerians and fans worldwide swiftly responded, expressing their displeasure and anger at what they perceived as harassment and insensitivity toward the young footballer.

Many fans argued that such content could hurt Osimhen’s confidence and mental well-being, especially after a high-pressure moment like a missed penalty, leading to them calling on Napoli to show more support and understanding for their player, who has been a key asset for the club.

In a country passionate about football and proud of its talented players like Osimhen, such incidents quickly become a matter of national concern. Nigerians rallied behind their star, urging Napoli to be more considerate and supportive of Osimhen, emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional support for athletes. 

Although, NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the incident served as a reminder of the significant influence football clubs have on their players’ lives and how they are perceived by fans worldwide.

Osimhem, however, took steps to delete any photos related to the club on his Instagram page and still managed to play for the club amidst the crises leading to Nigerians hailing him as a hero while others called for his transfer to another club come January. 

Entertainment: Celebrities rally round for Mohbad’s second burial

Nigerian social media has been buzzing with reactions as celebrities rally together for the second burial of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. NRTC WEEKLY learnt that the tragic passing of the former Marlian Record Label signee on September 12, 2023, shook the music industry and his fans, leading to a wave of support from fellow celebrities.

Celebrities such as Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh made headlines as they visited a prominent funeral home in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State to inquire about the necessary arrangements for Mohbad’s second burial. We (NRTC WEEKLY) confirmed that their solidarity and involvement in the funeral arrangements have sparked discussions and mixed reactions among Nigerians.

Netizens praised these celebrities for their support and commitment to ensuring a dignified farewell for Mohbad while some countered them. They view it as a heartwarming gesture of unity within the entertainment industry and a demonstration of love and respect for their late colleague.

Conversely, some individuals have expressed skepticism and raised questions about the involvement of celebrities in the funeral preparations, arguing that such gestures should remain private and not be turned into a public spectacle.

Politics: Ondo Deputy Governor impeachment saga

The impeachment saga involving the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa has stirred a range of reactions among Nigerians, with opinions divided on the matter.

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that worrying about the unending feud between the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and his deputy, the All Progressive Congress (APC) set up 9 man Committee to resolve the imbroglio.

The Committee chaired by the former governor of Katsina State, Hon. Aminu Bello Masari is mandated to not only intervene but also see to the peaceful reconciliation of all parties involved.

Upon the setup committee, some loyalists of the Deputy Governor opined that the impeachment has been viewed through the lens of political affiliation. 

The governor’s supporters argued that it was a necessary step, citing allegations of misconduct against the Deputy Governor.

Taken to their social media handles, Netizens berated how the impeachment process was going on leading to questioning whether due process was followed and whether the Deputy Governor was given a fair opportunity to defend himself. 

Business: Way out of economic problems

As Nigeria continues facing a bad economy, Nigerians have voiced diverse opinions on potential strategies to lift the country out of its economic challenges.

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that many citizens emphasize the need for a diversified economy, with a focus on agriculture, technology, and manufacturing to reduce reliance on oil revenue. They also call for improved infrastructure and energy access to attract investments and foster economic growth.

Leading stories: Mohbad’s case continues

The circumstances surrounding the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba known as Mohbad have taken a new dimension as the call for justice continued.

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Sam Larry has been arrested and is currently in Police custody assisting in the ongoing investigation by Police.

Reacting to the death accusation, Samson Balogun Olamilekan Eletu, known as Sam Larry, explained why he invaded the music video shoot of the late rapper, Ilerioluwa Olademeji Aloba, aka Mohbad, shortly before his sudden demise.

In a video that went viral after the singer’s death, Sam Larry was captured invading the set of a music shoot and threatening Mohbad with armed men.

However, Naira Marley has not returned to the country to surrender himself, but he has made a statement saying he’ll return if his safety is guaranteed and will help the Police in their investigation. 

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the coroner inquest looking into the cause of Mohbad’s death has agreed on the witnesses that will be called to give evidence in the matter.
