October 20: The night Nigerian youths realized it’s time to ‘Japa’

Nigerian youths are still yet to heal from the betrayal and heinous massacre of innocent #EndSARS protesters on the night of October 20, 2020.

A night that served as an epiphany for several young individuals in the country. In a nation of almost 200 million, the young populace do not feel safe and protected by their own leaders and those who are in power.

Tuesday, October 20, 2020 was a disheartening moment that would be unforgettable in the hearts of youths in Nigeria; especially those born in the late 80s to early 2000s.

Till date, the Nigerian government has failed to acknowledge the nefarious massacre of innocent protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos state. Time and again, the Lagos state government and the federal government have made contradictory report pertaining to the vicious incident that happened on that night.

The government made it apparent that they do not care about the wellbeing of the Nigerian populace, especially the youths who were at the time agitating for justice and demanding for the opportunity to not be killed, threatened and extorted by the now-defunct unit in the Nigerian police, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Since the October 20, 2020 incident, several Nigerian youths have found a way to abscond from the nation to seek greener pastures. While the Nigerian government treats their citizens with disdain, young individuals have decided to ply their trades overseas and become relevant to various countries in Europe and America.

No looking back, it is for greater good.

The Nigerian government has continued to lose some of it’s best brains and promising talent due to the negligence and nonchalant attitude of the leaders. Those who are at the helm of the government have continued to ridicule and deride their fellow countrymen; mocked them for being citizens of the Federal republic of Nigeria and are unapologetic about it because they are “bigger than the law”.

As Nigeria continues to lose some of it’s talented humans, it is only a matter of time before the nation plunges into the abyss. The nation has failed to make exponential progress since the last administration and her citizen has continued to suffer excruciatingly in recent years.

Simply put, the nation has been going round in circles without making any tangible progress. The youths in the country understand that their lives could be terminated in any moment by a trigger-happy police officer and justice would not be served.

Additionally, Nigerian youths understand that they are seen as second class citizens in their own nation, therefore, it is preferable to migrate to another nation and seek asylum. It is much better to be in a new nation that has the appropriate structure to aid in achieving your dreams and aspiration.

The Nigerian after watching his/her own military personnel shoot innocent on the night of Tuesday, October 20, 2020 understand that they have no privileges in their own home. Afterall, individuals who have absconded from the nation have shared more of positive news than their counterparts who have preferred to remain the conflicting nation.
