Nigeria’s Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) following an injury.
The 23-year-old sustained a suspected groin injury in training. He was thereafter unable to participate in the two friendly games the team has played in recent days.
While he was injures and being assessed, the Super Eagles whitewashed Al Gharib, a local Abu Dhabi-based side 12-0 prior to losing 2-0 to Guinea on Monday.

Boniface, who has appeared five times for Nigeria, broke the sad news on social media app X on Monday. He also wished the team well in Ivory Coast.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker’s injury comes days after Wilfred Ndidi was also ruled out of the AFCON through injury.

Options are limited upfront for the Super Eagles now. Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi couldn’t make the final squad due to injury. As it stands, Kelechi Iheanacho, despite making the team, is still unfit and doubtful.
Nigeria kickoff her 2023 AFCON campaign with the country’s first match against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
