A new BBC Africa Eye documentary has ignited controversy by airing explosive allegations against the late Nigerian televangelist Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as TB Joshua.

Titled “Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua,” the first part of the three-part series features harrowing testimonies from former church members claiming they were subjected to horrific acts within the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).

The documentary meticulously lays out the accusations, presenting firsthand accounts of alleged rape, torture, and forced abortions within the confines of SCOAN.

While TB Joshua passed away in June 2021, the documentary delves into his life and ministry, scrutinizing claims of manipulation and control alongside the disturbing allegations of physical and psychological abuse.

The late TB Joshua was revered by millions as a miracle worker and prophet, but the BBC team also investigates claims that Joshua’s influence extended beyond the church walls, allegedly reaching into the corridors of Nigerian politics.

It’s crucial to note that these are currently just allegations, and the documentary primarily focuses on the voices of the accusers.

However, the sheer gravity of the claims and the detailed testimonies presented undoubtedly demand serious investigation and impartial examination.

The release of the documentary has already sparked widespread debate and divided opinions.

Supporters of TB Joshua have vehemently defended his legacy, while others have expressed shock and demanded thorough examination of the allegations.

The exposƩ also describe a hierarchical system of control, enforced by fear and intimidation, where dissent was met with physical and psychological abuse.

The allegations go beyond verbal coercion, with several women claiming they were subjected to sexual assault and forced to undergo abortions if they became pregnant.

With two parts of the series yet to be released, “Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua” promises to further dissect the complex and controversial history of the renowned pastor and his church. This is a story that will undoubtedly continue to unfold, demanding careful consideration and respect for all parties involved while seeking truth and justice in the face of disturbing allegations.
