Which is better: Apple Music or Spotify?

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

If you are looking for a music streaming service, you might be wondering which one is better: Apple Music or Spotify? Both services have their pros and cons, and in this blog post, we will compare them based on some important criteria.

Library size

Apple interface

Apple Music claims to have over 100 million songs and more than 30,000 playlists in its catalog, while Spotify boasts over 80 million songs for all tiers of subscribers.

There is a lot of overlap between the two libraries, but some albums and releases may be exclusive to one service for a limited time. Apple Music also has more music videos, broadcast radio, and shows than Spotify.

Sound quality

Apple Music offers high-resolution streaming with lossless and spatial audio support for all subscribers at no extra cost. Spotify, on the other hand, still does not have a HiFi tier, although it is rumored to be working on one.

The current highest quality for Spotify Premium is 320 kbps, while Apple Music can stream up to 24-bit/192 kHz.

Pricing

Spotify has a clear advantage here, as it offers a completely free (ad-supported) tier that allows you to listen to any song on shuffle mode and skip up to six tracks per hour. Apple Music does not have a free tier, although it offers a three-month trial for new users.

The standard plans for both services are $9.99 per month, but Spotify also has cheaper options for students ($4.99) and couples ($12.99). Apple Music has a family plan for up to six members for $14.99 per month.

User interface

This is a matter of personal preference, but many users find Spotify’s app more intuitive and user-friendly than Apple Music’s. Spotify has a dark theme that is easier on the eyes, a better search function that allows you to filter by genre, mood, decade, and more, and a home screen that shows your recently played songs and playlists.

Apple Music’s app can be cluttered and confusing, especially on iOS devices where it is integrated with the native Music app.

Music discovery

Spotify excels at helping you discover new music that suits your taste, thanks to its personalized playlists like Discover Weekly, Release Radar, Daily Mixes, and more. It also has curated playlists for different genres, moods, activities, and occasions.

Apple Music also has some personalized and curated playlists, but they are not as varied or accurate as Spotify’s. However, Apple Music has an edge when it comes to classical music fans, as it has launched a dedicated Apple Music Classical app with 5 million classical music tracks in lossless and hi-res audio.

Social features: Spotify has better social features than Apple Music, as it allows you to follow your friends and see what they are listening to, create collaborative playlists with them, share your music on

social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, and integrate with apps like Discord and Tinder. Apple Music’s social features are limited to creating a profile, following artists, and sharing playlists with your contacts.

In conclusion, both Apple Music and Spotify are great music streaming services that offer a lot of value for music lovers.

However, depending on your preferences and needs, you might find one service better than the other. Here are some reasons why you might pick one over the other:

– Why pick Apple Music? If you care about sound quality, library size, exclusive features, and integration with Apple devices.

– Why pick Spotify? If you care about pricing, user interface, music discovery, podcasts and audiobooks, and social features.
